While the new research from the University of Illinois at Chicago shows the hand held gadgets to improve reading scores of students, the program also receives high marks for cost efficiency. By contracting with a Chinese manufacturer to produce the devices, Seth Weinberger said, the system can TeacherMate price $ 100, which includes reading and math software for kindergarten through second grade. That's less than the cost of textbooks for the same period, he said.

Weinberger, an attorney with Mayer Brown, who also serves as president of the Foundation, adopted the best practices of the nonprofit arena to expand the nonprofit. In 2010, he plans to make available reading software as an application for the iPhone, boosting efficiency and expanding the scope of the software for more children.
