NEW YORK (AP) - The crowd, celebrities and freezing temperatures - is all you need for New Year's Eve in New York.

Light snow fell in Times Square early Thursday and temperatures are forecast to be near freezing in 2009 comes to an end.

Police take extra care around New Year's Eve, when hundreds of thousands of people converge on Times Square. The patrol squads routinely suspicious vehicles, and those attending the festivities will be banned from backpacks.

Among those scheduled to entertain the audience are Jennifer Lopez, the cast of the Broadway musical "Hair" and Daughtry.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and 12 high school students in the city are in charge of pushing the button to lower the Waterford crystal ball. Then rain confetti to mark the beginning of 2010.
